Our Story
From one door in Johar Town
Rukh Foundation started at the door of one home in Johar Town, Lahore. Rukhsana Izhar encountered families unable to afford medicine, children missing meals and futures narrowing before they had begun. She responded in the most direct way she knew: by cooking and sharing food with the people around her.
For years, meals were prepared with the same care given to her own family. But food alone could carry a child only through the day. Education could change the direction of a lifetime. She began supporting children's schooling and teaching a small group from her home. Six children became twelve, then forty. Families were supported so children could stay in school instead of leaving to work.
By 2005, the effort had grown into Rukh Foundation School — a modest building with an ambition far larger than its footprint. Today, Rukh connects education with nutrition, student wellbeing, family livelihoods, climate action, practical skills and community partnerships. Its purpose remains the same: to ensure that a child's circumstances at birth do not decide the limits of their future.
Talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not. Rukh exists to close that gap — one child, one family and one community at a time.
